Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray for slumber long and deep
If I find I’m wide awake
A sleeping pill I just might take
Twisted in my flannel sheets
Lulled by steady soft heart beats
Beckon dreams to fill my head
While I snuggle in the bed
Now I rise to take a pee
Stumble cause I’m so sleepy
Stub a toe and choke back tears
Curse hoping no one hears
Back in bed to find the spot
That’s warm but I find it not
Instead I stare into the dark
Listening to dogs that bark
Until a cramp forms in my leg
I gasp and pray and then I beg
To let it pass and give me rest
I want to sleep but I’m distressed
Insomnia has come to visit me
Sleep deprived is what I’ll be
I don’t often have insomnia but boy howdy when I do I really have it bad. This happens maybe once or twice a year. It is usually linked to high levels of stress. And so if I’m not sure I’m under pressure, I’ll get the not so subtle hint via insomnia that I’ve exceeded my stress tolerance. Why insomnia now? Hmm. Lets see if I can make a list (maybe if I give it an airing it will go away or at least be slightly tamed):
I have to work on Saturday (7:30 AM – 10:30 AM?).
I have to work on Christmas Eve (7:30 AM to when we get done – 1:30ish?).
I have to work on Christmas Day (again 7:30 AM – 10:30 AM?).
I haven’t packed for the vacation – leaving on the 26th.
I haven’t gotten the Christmas Day meal finalized (where there won’t be leftovers).
I have laundry that needs to be done.
I still have gifts to wrap.
I have to attend the traditional Christmas Eve Eve breakfast with friends (which is on Sunday but is going to be breakfast for lunch).
I need to arrange for mail and newspaper pick-up.
We have to visit with Sparky’s family for a Christmas celebration on Sunday afternoon and I need to bake a pie or two and make fruit salad….
We need to schedule the master bathroom remodel that hopefully will be done while we are out of town.
I have to plan out some Geocaches to find in Florida while we are there.
There are some more things – like picking up some prescriptions but I’m going to stop. I am yawning and my eyes are getting heavy so maybe I can go to sleep. And stay asleep. For more than 2 hours. Maybe. But because I’m kind I’ve scheduled this to post after 6 AM – hopefully I’ll be asleep when you read this…
Sounds busy. Enjoy your holiday and vacation. The bathroom part is the problem for me. I trip over Cinch who is black and lays somewhere on my side. Rex speaks into my spot in the time I am in the bathroom connected to our bedroom or Wrangler rolls over onto my blankets to make him wrapped up like a burrito.

Hehe! Yeah, if Ranger were still with us, he’d be another obstacle! I just have to contend with Sparky stealing the covers or grabbing my pillow…

I resemble this entire post. One idea–buy the pies. Store bought = stress reduction. Have a blessed Christmas and a well deserved vacation!

I would buy the pies if I could find one that was good – I am making my Eggnog Pie as requested by the multitude! I’m so sorry you have experiences this post… I hope you don’t suffer the insomnia frequently! I’m going to go to bed early tonight as I have to be at work at the crack of dawn (actually well before dawn). Have a joyous Christmas yourself! I’m planning on taking some photos and posting when I get back…

It sounds like time for a vacation — I hope you get some good sleep in the meantime! Why is it that everything piles up just before the holiday, or just before a vacation?! Oh, and thanks for the reminder about the newspaper!

I’m glad I could jog your memory with my incessant list making. I had to gather old lists and put them in the recycling bin so I wouldn’t duplicate my efforts… I’m heading to bed early tonight and hope to get a solid 8 hours of sleep. We had an abbreviated work day but between my coworkers and myself we knocked it out in record time. Just have a couple things left for tomorrow when I’m at work.

The sleep will help reduce your stress level! I’m glad you were able to get lots done today — hope you don’t have to work too much before you go away!

I was able to get some sleep and I am much better today. Even having to work this morning wasn’t so bad since saintvi came over this afternoon and we went geocaching and then to dinner!

To think I’m under stress…not even.

We all have stresses and have different levels of tolerance. Seems I have a pretty high tolerance for some of the shenanigans that go on in the work environment but even I have a breaking point!!

Do you have a sleep routine? The social worker helped me make mine. If I have insomnia, I keep my eyes open and look at the wall until my body relaxes. Then I watch my breathing, making sure to get a few deep breaths. Then I close my eyes, let myself think a while and focusing on breathing. After 30 minutes, I’m out for the night.

I generally fall asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow. The insomnia only happens once or twice a year when I get too stressed. I’m pretty good about managing my stress levels but there are times when there is a confluence of events that puts me over the edge. I’m back to normal now!

Wow, Muri! I thought my to-do list was long. No wonder you’ve got insomnia, your mind is going a mile a minute. The poem is a great description of all the things that can distract you from good sleep–having to pee, a stubbed toe, feeling cold, being in the grips of a leg cramp (those are THE WORST). Everything will come together, the things that need to be done will get done, and you might even enjoy yourself a little. At least the Dirty Santa exchange with Sparky’s family will be fun. 🙂

We’ve got everything on the list accomplished (except for midnight Mass tonight and working and opening gifts tomorrow). It is all good. Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Oh my… You won’t have a moment to breathe! That’s more than I would want to be obligated to. Love the poem. It’s perfect. I hope you manage to get some sleep. Do enjoy your Christmas and your vacation! Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year filled with peace

Thank-you! I’m glad my poem was loved! (even if leg cramps aren’t anyone’s favorite) I’ve caught up on the sleep and I’ve checked most of the things off my To Do list. I hope you and yours have a blessed and merry Christmas and a wonderful new year!!
