Looking at the Sharp End

I was being a very good wife and I cleaned the house last Saturday. Sparky was working from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM so I had the whole day. I would have liked to get together with saintvi and done a little geocaching. I could have gone to Goodwill since they were having a 40% off sale. I could have stopped at Kohl’s with my 20% off coupon and a credit on my account. I even could have gone grocery shopping to pick up a few items. But I didn’t. I stayed home and cleaned.
1. I vacuumed the entire house. This entailed moving furniture and shaking out rugs.
2. I mopped. It had been awhile, since it seemed futile to mop when there was a constant trail of wet boot prints.
3. I cleaned the bathrooms. I still don’t know how he manages to get stuff splattered on the underside of the toilet seat.
4. I did 3 loads of laundry (washed/dried/folded).
5. I cleaned the kitchen. That doesn’t sound like a big deal but it was a complete cleaning. I did the counter, sink, all the appliances inside and out and even wiped down the cabinets!
6. The most difficult was doing a KonMari on my clothes closet. Well, one of my closets. I have a hard time letting go of some items. I attribute that to eternal optimism. I just know that next year I will have lost weight/gained weight and it will fit. It was only 5 years ago that I finally decided to give away that one very expensive maternity dress. I was 56 years old and it just wasn’t going to be worn by me ever again. I had 3 large garbage bags of shirts/blouses that I shared with the sisters in law. The ones they didn’t snatch up are poised to go into the neighborhood garage sale in May.
7. I made a sumptuous dinner. I had some leftover chicken so I made Chicken Tikka Masala. It turned out tasty. I had to wrangle the 20 pound bag of rice to refill the smaller container we keep in the kitchen. I didn’t tell Sparky because he doesn’t want me to injure myself. I managed but I think I strained a muscle in my neck. Anyway dinner was a success.
8. I balanced the checkbook and paid some bills.
All in all it was difficult but necessary. I felt accomplished and my house smelled clean. I am hopeful that it will stay relatively clean for a few days. At least if I can dissuade Sparky from eating chips and Cheetos in the family room…

  1. When Wrangler is gone I clean like that. I have not mopped since Christmas. We have had snow and mud since then. With the dogs we cut them off so they stay on tile until dry. Its easier to clean when Wrangler is not underfoot creating chaos as I go. But he does move the furniture in the living room every month or so and vacuum. He cleans the toilets and showers so I just have to clean the rest.

  2. Sounds very productive, Muri! A lot for just one day. Now that everything is done, maybe you can geocache with your friend or go shopping. I ran errands today to be prepared for the coming ice/snow. With ample food, supplies, and reading material, I could stay in (and love it!) until spring comes. πŸ™‚

  3. Since we didn’t get together last Saturday, I made a list of all the sweeping, vacuuming, dusting, mopping, etc. that needed to be done and decided to take a nap instead.

  4. I know you’re feeling satisfied! There are few things in life that give one such a sense of well being as a thoroughly cleaned house. That said, I believe that the joy of a clean house is commensurate with how long it has been since it was last cleaned. So, I’m going for a bike ride so that when I get around to cleaning, it will be more gratifying.

  5. Good job! I used to enjoy my swiller sweeper when I was in the army. I like my home to smell good as well. I was a bit spoiled, unlike you, today. My grandma let me go to the super nice grocery store and get princess food: sushi, avocados, oysters and salmon. It’s rare we’re allowed to splurge because the courts are picky. I will be eating soup next week and noodles.

  6. Always feels good to get so much accomplished. Then I prowl around and dare anyone to leave something out of place or smudge a surface. πŸ™‚ Enjoy the serenity of clean! (I can’t understand how hoarders can deal with all the clutter w/out driving themselves bananas!)

  7. And next, you can please come to my house and do all those things here. Btw, I’ve discovered that ‘Mud Room’ means, Always Muddy. In a Vermont winter, what’s the point of vacuuming/mopping the mud room, I ask?

    1. Sorry I’m not renting out my cleaning services. The mud room is by definition one that is is muddy! It is the same in VT as IN…
To answer the question – there is no point in mopping until moments before guests arrive!!

        1. Thanks! There never was much chance I’d collect the clowns but Sparky was very afraid my Grandmother would leave them to me upon her death. As for eating in bed there was a real possibility of crumbs in the sheets!!!

          1. πŸ™‚ Nothing worse than rolling around in crumb trapped between sheets while clowns stare at you in the dark πŸ™‚
