Looking Under the Bed

Things that lurk
Hide beneath the bed
Stealing socks
Grabbing toys
Breeds dust bunnies with spiders
Waiting for nighttime

Things are lost
Never seen again
When they fall
Off the bed
Held hostage by the monsters
No ransom note sent

Unseen things
Frighten grown ups too
Silent threats
Poison gas
The death of democracy
Don’t turn off the light

I know you all want an explanation. So I will oblige. This is a Shadorma which is a Spanish poetry form consisting of at least one stanza of 6 unrhymed lines. The syllable count is 3/5/3/3/7/5.
What? You want a little commentary? Okay. As a child I had a fear of the dark. I was especially afraid of spiders and the dark space under the bed. As an adult I am also afraid but not so much of the dark but the darkness that seems to fill so many hearts. So I was reading a blog of someone I followed on Xanga. It was one of those innocuous posts that are the earmark of this blogger. But sandwiched between the photos of children and animals was a remark that made my head spin. “God is making a way and shining His light on us, as evil is being exposed. I would really recommend Parler for truth in news.” Parler has recently been in the news as one of the social media outlets that has been removed from the Google App Store. I was not familiar with Parler but learned plenty about it. It is nothing more that a FB wannabe except they pander to the alt-right, neo-nazi, KKK/Proud Boys, and their ilk. It is rife with conspiracy theorists especially those who have been banned from other platforms. But most importantly they pointedly DO NOT fact check or vet any of the news content. Most of what is posted is opinion and ramblings of some very disturbed people. I was surprised but not shocked. This person is a rabid Trump supporter and has been for the last 4 years. It just made me feel very afraid that so many seemingly “good” people have bought into the nonsense. One should never underestimate crazy. Crazy is now on the loose. Although Trump maintains he will leave (and not attend the inauguration- typical for a pouting baby), I’m not so sure that the 45th President won’t require an eviction by force from the White House!

  1. Cool poem, first, and foremost. I’ll see if I can remember the name of the style when we get to April. Ha.

But… 1) I followed a rabbit yesterday to discover that there’s a person (and probably more) who firmly believes that Trump was inaugurated for his second term on Jan 11. (I chose not to tell this person that that’s not how this works.) and 2) I have one Trump “friend” who I occasionally check out her feed for “fun”. She is rather condescending in her belief that she has the correct info about all. Naturally she denies that Trump incited a riot. 3) There really is an alternative source out there. They literally are hearing different things than we are. I still kinda feel sorry for his fan base, although the cray cray is terrifying.

    1. Carrie, it is quite the crazy! I was exploring the alternative news sources as I was trying to parse what Parler was all about. Yegods! It terrified me that so many believe some, any, all of what is out there. I want to see a story from several perspectives but fabrication of events that just. didn’t. happen. makes it seem the world has gone over the edge (of that flat earth that many cling to). I hope there isn’t the same mental anguish that many suffered in post-Nazi Germany. The number of suicides, the skyrocketing alcoholism, depression, and self-destructive behavior that plagued so many when they came to grips with what the country had done and that they had allowed to be done, what they closed their eyes to and what they aided and abetted. I think the manipulated people are going to have an eye-opening moment soon…

      1. Yes, I think that’s why I do feel sorrow for them.
Every now and again, I wonder if I am on the wrong side of history. How devastating that would be. (Pretty sure I’m not.)
I hope we all live through the eye opening.

        1. I hear you. I can imagine that there are some who will suffer the consequences of their actions and have remorse and there will be others who will be completely unabashedly proud of what they did. Nuremberg showed both but their fate was the same…
On the other hand we are now at the pivotal point – some are pointing and declaring that “the emperor has no clothes” while others are still trying to get some of that special cloth! We do live in interesting times and I just hope we all survive them!

  2. New platforms are being created, and marketed to groups of every political attitude. So you can scroll all day through info that only reinforces what you already believe, and you can post whatever you want without “trolls” hating or contradicting you. My husband went with a leftie platform called LIKER for a while for just that reason. I don’t think living in your own little world, refusing to entertain opposing opinions, is healthy. It’s important to know what the trolls are thinking, but don’t waste your breath (or keystrokes) arguing with them.

    1. Yes Joan, you have to know what is being said – then fact check the bejesus out of everything no matter the slant of the source. My mother has been the target of trolls. She was “rescued” by my sons and has been given a short course of “don’t feeding the trolls” by all the grandsons. Some folks don’t understand satire or parody and take posts by The Onion, Babylon Bee, and others as truth! Makes me wonder about the educational system in our country!

    1. Thanks Chris! It is layer upon layer of crazy in the US right now – we have COVID, then BLM protests (with the added chaos of rioting), then the government’s (and I mean Donald “Delirium Tremens” Trump) attempt to prevent the election from happening by nearly killing the US postal service, and then finally the culmination with the riot and storming of the capitol building by his mob of insurrectionists. If I was writing a story I doubt my imagination could have dreamed up all the twists this narrative is taking! They often say that truth is stranger than fiction…

  3. This morning I heard some Congress people are now afraid of those they work with. I know I was surprised the Q has members of Congress now. Yes I would be afraid to go to work.

    1. There is a time and place to discuss politics and religion but must be done in a manner that does not force either on an unwilling party. As for the blogging format, it is one that allows people to pass over content they do not want to see… I’m hoping my country can get a grip and move forward.

  4. At reading the title of this post, Val, I was waiting for a funny one . But , not at all, this is a serious post , very courageous , where you express your opinion clearly.
I wish for America the new President and the woman vice-president gave again to the USA the face of liberty and prosperity for the world .
    Love ❤

  5. interesting format, your last few lines say it all!

Many more things to fear than under the bed monsters … its the fear mongering mass hysteria of craziness = not based in reality! We are all waiting and watching but doubt the psychopath will leave quietly, his disciples will ensure there is more turmoil 😦

  6. I don’t think we should make Biden live there. I think the White House should be turned into a museum and Biden should be free to choose his own presidential residence. The West Wing should become a museum to the slaves who built the White House. I think this past year has said, “Move on, away, from this sullied tradition. It’s time for a new world.”

I like the poem! Interesting form.

    1. Thanks Martha. The form is one I’ve used before and I seem to return to it every so often. There is a lot of history in the White House and it mostly is a museum. The personal quarters of the first family are tucked away – probably was a very cramped area for Melania and Baron considering what they were used to… As for the future. I have only one hope and that is for a peaceful and safe inauguration.

  8. There are no fewer than seven dates, by which Trump is to be “re-inaugurated”. The seventh, and last, is March 4-the old inauguration day. Never mind, that the man himself is perfectly fine holding court at Mar-a-Lago. Unless he plans to be the new iteration of the Avignon Pope, I don’t think he will present himself as a commander-in-chief again, any time in the near future.

    1. I suspect his plan is to stay out of jail. His second step is to avoid impeachment or convictions that would prevent him from holding government office. Then I’m guessing his final plan would be to rally his base and run for President again and possibly incite a more organized and possibly successful coup to become “President for life”… At least that would be my worst nightmare!!
