Looking at the Grass

Upon a blade
The temperatures freeze vapor
Appears warm in an ice coat
Because few words melt
Rather the god of glass grass
Spreads anxiety and insincerity
Run people
This course finds criticism
Hustle away from responsibility
Even the bushes and buds
Hide but are found

Spring is trying very hard to arrive. It isn’t getting much traction though. As soon as a tree dares push a bud onto a branch, we get more cold. Yesterday there was fog in the evening and this morning everything was coated in a thin glaze of ice. I was looking at the grass and every blade was encased in ice. I know that beneath the ice the grass is still supple but currently it is immobile. I feel that at times I am frozen in place and though everyone around me is running toward their own destinies, I am simply waiting for mine to find me… Which is the better course?

The above is a little free verse since I am feeling a bit trapped. I suppose letting the poetry have some free rein will eventually bring me back to the main road.

    1. Thanks tons Carol! I hope you are feeling better and your sense of taste has returned. My sister says her ability to taste sour is broken. When she tastes lemon or pickles all she gets is bitter and salty….

    1. I’m searching high and low (still haven’t found the sock) and it seems I’ve found hope and love and maybe a little bit of spring-like weather. The rain has started and everything has thawed so we are getting the April showers early!

  1. Wintery here to today in Iowa and back home in northwest Kansas. I am one not to rush my destiny. We are looking at change and I know when the right opportunity comes along it will feel right.

  2. It’s a great metaphor, Val! In this area, a big citrus growing area, there are predicted frosts several times a year. The growers used to fire up “smudge pots” to blanket the trees with a layer of smoke that would keep the cold out. The smoke was banned, and they now sprinkle the trees with water — the water freezes on the leaves and flowers (as in your poem), and keep them from freezing below 32 degrees. When the weather warms, so do the trees, and everything becomes vibrant again.

    1. I think the water is better than the smoke but still begs the question of use during a drought… Anyway that’s a question best left for another time (but I’m biased since I don’t like oranges)…

  3. Val, how beautiful! I love the imagery! I’m feeling it here in Missouri, too. Like the grass, we’ll soon be unfrozen. 🤍💚🤗 can you feel my hugs warming you up?

  4. Spring is always a back and forth season. I always feel better once it settles in. I don’t think we realize how oppressive winter can be until it goes away. (K)

    1. I would love to visit – Sparky however has mapped out our next trip. We are headed to Utah where he is going to try to kill me by hiking in 5 national parks. He says they will be easy trails but that’s what he said when we took the “death march” across the desert…

      1. If you should by chance get to Riverside, PLEASE let me know, and I’ll come to visit you there — it’s about an hour’s drive from here — better yet, I’ll give you directions to come here so you can see the coast!

          1. Teehee- Your computer may have eaten the first comment, but the comment arrived on my computer just before this one! Thanks for making the effort to send it again! I do hope you’ll be able to visit soon I’d also love to meet you, too, perhaps over a nice seafood dinner by the marina at Dana Point, o, if I’m up to it, a geocaching day along the coast, or at the San Diego Zoo — there are lots of possibilities!

    1. Seems there are a lot of trapped people… At least I’m not trapped under rubble from a bombed building or trapped between hostile forces. Being trapped in my own mind or by inertia isn’t half as bad!
