I don’t know about you but I’m completely out of breath. I’ve got a stitch in my side and I’m doubled over with my hands clutching my knees as I gulp air. I shouldn’t be surprised. It always happens when I don’t pace myself. This year started off at a dead run. I barely had time to close the door before we were out of the house and on our way to Florida. That was followed by the idea that we should have a sisters only retreat (again in Florida). I was able to hop on a plane and make that trip in record time. In between and woven through the travel was ceramics class, a research study, church meetings and obligations! And magically (or maybe maniacally) I managed to clean house, cook meals, sort and prep for a garage sale and even blog 3 times a week and read & comment on those blogs I follow. That puts us a mere 11 days before National Poetry Month and I’m exhausted.
I was never a track star. In 7th grade the girls were all lined up in the gym and told to race to the other end. The gym teachers (and the track coaches) were all standing around with stop watches. We ran. I finished in the middle of the pack which I thought was pretty good. That was until we were all then lined up single file and had to individually run to the center line and back. I could hear the comments the track coach was making to the gym teacher, “Runs too slow.” “Runs like she is carrying a cup of coffee.” and the most damning “Runs like a girl.” I didn’t hear what they said about me. But then I was shorter than almost everyone so even if I kept up I was working harder to cover the same distance. And it seems to still be the case. I feel that no matter how fast I go I never cover as much ground as I should.
Which brings me back to being winded. The only thing you can do once you get to the point of gasping for air with a sharp pain in your side is to stop. So I’m stopping for a breather. I’m not going to clean any thing. The laundry can wait (we have enough clothes that I could forego laundry for a month and not run out). We have restaurant gift certificates that we need to use. And I’m going to just breathe. I should be ready to jump into National Poetry Month and sprint through April with nary a care in the world…
that sounds lovely.

Yep. Sparky prefers to have home cooked meals but we have a stack of gift cards… Maybe not eat out every day but at least twice a week will be good!

They post a prompt every day which you can follow or not, and you post a link to your poem in the comments section. A number of blogs I follow now, I first discovered there. You can also register your blog–there’s a link on the website. I do try to do the entire month, which is exhausting for me, but I’m always glad I did.

Thanks K. I’m hosting a scavenger hunt that I’d love for you to join – we have fun and I’m always learning something new from those who participate. Because it is abbreviated (only 13 prompts) it allows for participation in other events!

Thanks for the invite, I’ll have to see what it is when you post it. I’m definitely feeling like I’m already trying to do to much. And that’s even before laundry and cleaning the bathroom.

Hehe! The scavenger hunt is very flexible – you could do them all in one post or mix and match or even combine them with other prompts from other sites… they should be a piece of cake!

I’ll check it out. I’m having trouble with that cake these days.

Muri go – for that break; some runs we’ll never win anyway (like cleaning the house!) Her’s a woman who knows what sh’e talking about – it’s taken me 2 weeks returning from Ger getting back into my routines and I am not quite there yet. But, I have come up with a mantra for house work: I (only) do a little bit more than I absolutely have to every day. It’s a bit like OA ‘only for today…’ and it seems to work for me, for now. Looking forward to seeing you ion poetry month, well rested. π

It is wonderful to stop for a break when required, but isn’t it wonderful to have those little legs going at full throttle at times too? Ah, Muri, as my old Dad used to say ” wouldn’t be dead for quids”.

Your life sounds really exciting…but exhausting. I have a super achiever friend, like you, who has mastered the art of cramming her life full of stuff, but still can allocate time for an unhurried bike ride and lunch nearly every week. I’m always amazed when she takes time to lie in the grass at the side of the trail to simply enjoy the smells, sounds and blue sky above. She claims she’s lazy but her energy is like yours, indefatigable!

I leave cleaning to one day each fortnight, except the bed, which gets made first thing, the dishes which get washed almost immediately and the laundry-once a week, whether I’m out of clothes or not. The roses do smell sweet and are an energizing force.
