Looking for the Aww Factor

We have had Mochi for about 6 weeks. She has integrated into our family seamlessly! She is such a loving and mellow dog that everyone is in love with her. We introduced her to the next door neighbors. After only 5 minutes (when she met all three of their kids), they were offering to take care of her for the 2 weeks we were going to be gone! Her biggest problem is a skittishness around clicking noises – this includes the click as the furnace fan starts, when the toaster pops up, the starting of the window AC unit, the pop of the bathroom door lock…I was thinking hard about it. I think her very first owners were hunters and tried to take her out with their other dogs only to discover she is “gun shy”. Perhaps she was traumatized. They might have repeatedly fired their guns hoping to “get her used to the sound”. Maybe they beat her every time she flinched with the sound. All I know for sure is that clicker training will never work for her! But in all other respects she is a dog owner’s dream! She walks on a leash like a champ. She doesn’t mind a bath and doesn’t put up any fight even with the nail trimming. She is so very house trained. She has never had an accident and lets us know when she needs to go out. She even takes treats ever so daintily!

This is her Dobby the House Elf impression when she is asking for a taste of whatever you are eating…

Mochi asking why you stopped rubbing her tummy.

Mochi asking for yet another tummy rub…

Mochi after a hard day having had more than her 3 daily walks. We are working on increasing her stamina since she has been living the life of a couch potato for far too long! You will note that even in her sleep she has one ear up and one ear down…

This is sleepy Mochi having been awakened for dinner. She always looks rather bleary eyed until she realizes her tummy alarm is going off! She is a 6:00 AM and PM eater. On the dot thank you! I hope this fulfills everyone’s cute dogs of WP fix. I’m sure we will take more pictures and of course now that Mochi is part of the family our Christmas photos will feature her prominently!

  1. Mochi!!!! Mochi Monday! Mochi,โ€ฆAunt Karla loves you. You are very precious. Finley and I understand your issue with clicking. Finley wants to share she was rescued and has some issues with certain sounds. You and I are on the same schedule as I take my chemo at those exact times, Mochi! We are glad to have you in the neighborhood! ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’•โค๏ธ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿพ

    1. She wagged her little 6 inch long tail and was smiling as I read this to her! She loves attention and the prospect that someone, anyone, will give her pet or a scratch… I will think of you when she is fed and give her a pat for you! Wouldn’t it be fun if Finley and Mochi could meet?! She met Mackie and Gomer and now has 2 new best friends (well, Mackie is a friend – Gomer is an acquaintance who likes to chase and be chased)!! I’ll have to remember to post updates every now and again!

  2. I wonder how she could be reassured with those sounds? I know Mr.Grey hears “it’s OK” around here. Does she have different eye colors or was that the camera? Glad she is doing well.

    1. Bonnie she is starting to get used to some of the normal house sounds but the toaster still makes her jump. She has one brown and one blue eye! It looks very different if you’ve never seen that before. The little girls next door wanted to know how that happened… too young for a discussion on genetics but were fine with the “God made her that way” explanation!

    1. She is a very calm dog and the neighbors’ 2 yr old was holding onto her and patting kind of randomly and Mochi just stood there and smiled. She doesn’t jump up on people and she isn’t one to lick faces or hands so perfect around little ones… I think they’d take her if we ever needed a weekend sitter!

  3. Oh she is so lovely! A shame about the clicking noises but you could be right. Whenever Maya hears something new, sometimes she starts, so we show her what it is . The other day I was walking her past someone’s house on a different route to normal and the wind rustled the bush which made her back off. I put my hand in it and encouraged her to sniff, then rustled it myself and she was OK.
I’m sure Mochi will be OK as she has loving owners.

    1. She is getting better but the toaster still makes her nervous! She is getting better with the AC and furnace fan. We gave her some “calming” treats and she was fine during the last thunderstorm. So improvement is occurring.

      1. Wonderful! We’ve only had a couple of rolls of thunder since Maya came into our family so it’s early days though she seemed OK with it Fireworks are a concern though but we shall see,

        1. Mochi didn’t care about the fireworks – they were distant enough that it was no more than a rumble. Still a drop in the barometer and she is looking worried. It makes me think she spent some time in the rain…

    1. Hehe! Dogless! That is a new favorite word! We are definitely “with dog”. Sparky’s sister is going to watch her while we are vacationing. I just hope she wants to come home after spending 2 weeks with 2 teens that will fawn over her constantly!

  4. You’re probably right about her nervousness with the clicking sound. I’m glad she has adjusted so well and blended seamlessly into your life. It’s a timely entry too. I had two mochi balls this morning. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. What flavor? I prefer taro but Sparky likes the peanut butter, son#1 always opts for green tea and son#2 wants red bean… We had one package left but that was consumed over 4th of July (a special treat)!

    1. Yes it was was meant to be – she has managed to charm everyone in the family. On Sundays we go to the inlaws for ice cream with the family extended. Last week we left Mochi home (after having her with us the last couple of times because we sat outside). Everyone wanted to know why we didn’t bring her!!

  5. Awwwwww! What a sweetheart! We have a skittish pound pup whose life before us must have been scary. It took a while for her to trust that we were her forever family, we weren’t going to send her away again. She is 11 now, our watchdog, requester of tummy rubs and tidbits of sausage from our breakfast sandwiches. She is very scheduled too, for feeding and walks.

  6. You are such a loving and caring person Val! I think over time, Mochi will be more comfortable with the sounds around her and especially the clicking sounds.

    1. That’s what we are hoping for… She is starting to connect the toaster with a corner of buttered toast so I’m pretty sure she will come around – at least as far as the toaster!

    1. It worked with her previous owner which is why she is on a diet! She should weigh about 29 pounds and has lost about 10 pounds with one more to goโ€ฆ so no table scraps or people food. I have to be the โ€œbad guyโ€ at home!

  7. I’m one of those completely besotted with Mochi. If ever you need a dog sitter, I’m your person – as long as we’re not running off on a road trip together!
