Looking for the Dream State

This is my response to the W3 poetry prompt hosted by David at The Skeptic’s Kaddish. The Poet of the Week, Sarah David asked that we write a poem of 14 lines or fewer in any form on the theme of “dreams”. Dreams are elusive, slipping through my fingers on most mornings. I do have a couple recurring dreams, one really fun one and several that I classify as stress dreams. But the majority of my dreams leave me with a faint taste on the tip of my tongue or a lingering feeling of someone holding my hand or brushing my hair…

Seal slip into the dream ocean
I swim through memories undone
Surrounded by liquid emotion
Pulled, twisted, plunged deep and spun
Shadow ghost of the give and take
Revise the day, the night remake

Silver moonbeams a rare silk line
Strands of regret and gray hair
I weave my history symbol and sign
Connect my heart from here to there
What was, could or should be
The dream is my soul’s fervent plea

Jolted awake the dream dissipates
I rise to pass through reality’s gates

    1. Karla! I’m thrilled that you are here and that you enjoyed this one. I just got your newsletter. The toddler quotes were adorable overload!! You are in my thoughts and prayers always. The prayer warriors met last week and I didn’t have an update – but I’ve got one now – thanks!! I love you! Hugs to you and Finn ❤ ❤ ❤

      1. Aww 🥰 I’m so glad you enjoyed the newsletter! We can learn so much from toddlers! I’m so glad you’ll be able to give them an update. Specifically, my bones are not cooperating. I know it’s a struggle worse in cold weather. My Dad was diagnosed with lung cancer two weeks ago. Can you please add him too? My poor Mom. We are a family filled with faith. And it’s sure being tested! We win no matter what! I love you and appreciate you. Finn does too! 🐾🐾🥰💕🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

        1. Oh Karla, I will contact the prayer warriors and add your dad (and mom) to the list!! I love you and wish I could give you a hug – a virtual hug will have to do! So consider yourself hugged! Mochi hopes Finn is keeping everyone’s spirits up and providing the cuddles that are so important!!

            1. Mochi is curled up under the computer desk at my feet – she is having an exciting dream (lots of twitching and little baby barks) so I won’t wake her to apply the sent hugs, kisses and belly rubs! You are very welcome – I just wish I was able to do more…

  1. I didn’t recall dreaming much until I got a CPAP machine and used it. I guess not strangling as you sleep helps to maintain a dream state (rueful chuckle). I like how you describe your dreams, and found a way to poetically do it, too.

  2. Beautifully spun words Val. A little bit of a sonnet with a twirl of a villanelle to my reading ears. I love the flow of emotion from line to line. Dreams are elusive little darlings and your poem has that dreamlike quality.
