Looking at the Grip of Winter

Cold winter air makes clear the sky
Mocks my hopes and dreams of July
Achy bones chill will amplify

See the beauty of snow and stars
And frosty breath hangs as galaxies
Cold winter air makes clear the sky

All shades of gray from black to white
Surround the drifts and ice coated world
Mocks my hopes and dreams of July

Wrapped in flannel covered in wool
The winter wind seeps through my soul
Achy bones chill will amplify

It is March and the robins have arrived and are feeling the winter cold. They’ve been attacking the last remaining berries on the trees and scavenging the suet and what bird seed they can find. It happens every year – the robins arrive too early and are forced to survive. Some don’t. Sparky had to toss a frozen one in the trash can so that Mochi wouldn’t attempt to eat it. I console myself that they are not endangered. I’m able to acknowledge the beauty of winter and at the same time admit that I’m completely over it. I want warmer weather. I want to see some blue skies. I want green – grass, trees, the return of the frogs. I guess I’m greedy and impatient. I’m wondering if I used the word please if that would make a difference. If only asking nicely would make spring arrive more quickly…

The above poem is written as a Cascade where there are 4 three line stanzas. The first stanza’s lines become the last line in the following stanzas. There is no required rhyme or meter. To make this more fun, I also wrote it as a Cento using lines from a poem I wrote a year ago. The diagram would look like: A/B/C, X/X/A, X/X/B, X/X/C

  1. I can sympathize. It’s cold here again too, and my super is stingy with the heat even in the dead of winter. But the days are longer and today a beautiful blue sky! It’s nice to be rid of the greyness, if only for a day or two. (K)

    1. We are forecast for more snow on Friday. It was sunny for about 3 hours this afternoon but the clouds are rolling in again. I am enjoying all the sunshine I get and I hope you can find blue skies more often!

  2. I woke up today (in Northern IL) to a winter warning of 6″ of snow for Thursday. I just decorated my home for Spring, so that shows where my heart’s yearnings are (right next to yours). Ugh.

    1. I know Dodi! We are supposed to get that snow beginning on Friday! Of course it could go a little north and peter out over the lake or it could dump 6″ on us too! I try to avoid putting out the spring dish towels or putting a spring wreath on the front door because I don’t want to tempt fate – sort of like washing the car and then having a thunderstorm!

            1. That sounds about right! The temps have been hovering around freezing and the next “warm day” with a high of 40F is this coming Wednesday! And then really cold on the weekend! I just want Spring to get here!!

    1. I’m sorry you are back into the wintery weather. We are supposed to get snow Friday. Sparky wants to go geocaching but I’m sort of a geocaching wimp anymore. I used to brave the snow drifts and freezing temps – now I’d rather stay inside!!

    2. We are warming up, but expecting a “pineapple express” in the next couple of days — a rainstorm similar to those we’ve had over the last month, but with warm water from Hawaii! The mountain snow is expected to start melting, which apparently means flooding in the flat lands.

  3. Well I look to you for edification in poetry
but I thought that Cento was just Italian food,
then read that it was a form of plagiarizing,
Not quiet that but with I read farther..

Teacher you forgot to tell me about this one..
    a cento could be fun
    who’s woods these are
    may be the one
    I know the next bar
    but got to run~!

    1. SAM! This is a very poetic comment! I’m happy that you have now learned about the Cento. I hope you make use of the information and share a Cento with us all!!

        1. My sister has bugs the size of my hand – and they fly! They really freak me out when they swoop in. The bugs don’t stop me from visiting but I’m definitely not moving there permanently!

            1. I agree. But when one falls from the sky aiming at my head I do “scream like a little girl” and do an icky dance. I’m not out there killing things but I really don’t want to have to deal with them! I’ll keep Indiana!

    1. Judy I would love to come visit but currently Sparky is set on visiting foreign countries after this May’s trip to Hawaii. Looks like I’ll have to wait a bit before I get to meet Janet and you…

      1. But, Sparky could bring the dog AND my neighbors speak Spanish, a Filipino dialect, and who knows what the schizophrenic guy who lives in a tent, across the street speaks. Mentone is a foreign country compared to the Mid West.

      2. If you are headed to HI, you could create a 1-day layover in the LAX or JWA area (LA or Orange County), and we could all meet for lunch or dinner!

        1. That would be really fun – but alas Sparky has already booked the flight(s). No joy as he has us on a very long and tight schedule… I’m going to have to intervene the next time he books a flight!

  4. … as if asking nicely would have spring arrive sooner… I love that phrase, Muri. – Am travelling – postponed by 2 days – by coach from Cologne to London on Friday night and then on to the Midlands of England (see upcoming post about that) – still not quite sure I’ll manage to miss the snowfall predicted.

    1. We had a few warm days – the day lilies and tulips at church started to come up. Then we got snow and they are buried! I hope it doesn’t kill them or freeze the would be flowers!

                1. We love Mochi (the Japanese dessert and the dog)! She is just the right amount of stick-to-you and sweetness so is well named! At the dog park there were several people who wanted to take her home!!
