Looking in the Spam Folder

I have finally made the “big time”. You see for a longtime I had so few readers that the spambots ignored me. Well no more! I would get maybe 1 or two comments tagged as spam a month! And many times they were just someone who posted from a phone instead of a laptop – not spam after all. So far I’ve had 10 spam comments in the last two days! And they are comical. Some were just straight up solicitations to “improve my website” with multiple links to their services or a list of products that they were certain I’d jump to buy. Another said things like “I really like your blog. I’m going to recommend it to my friends. Please follow me.” Another wanted to interest me in product to “enhance my manhood”. And a couple were in a language I didn’t recognize (but Google Translate indicated were Turkish). But the best was so funny that I copied it here:

“The very next time I read a blog, I hope that it does not fail me as much as this particular one. After all, I know it was my choice to read through, but I truly believed you would have something useful to say. All I hear is a bunch of whining about something you can fix if you weren’t too busy seeking attention.”

What makes it funnier is that it was a comment on my 2021 NPM Scavenger Hunt where I list the prompts! It is painfully obvious that they didn’t read the post. As for responding – not on your life! If there is one lesson I learned it is “Don’t feed the trolls.” So I’ve deleted the comment. I am however highly amused. They must have never been told that you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar!!

Have you been plagued by spam? Have you had any that were so outrageous that they made you laugh?

  1. I always have lots of spam, with the occasional real comment mislabeled. Lately it’s been automotive dealers. For awhile it was pornography. I don’t even read it anymore, if it’s not from someone I recognize, I just delete it.

  2. I used to get them on Xanga. Haven’t had the “pleasure” thus far on WP. BUT,
I get about five phone calls from people all over the country about my book, and how worthy it is and how they can help me get a better coverage, and that it is fit to make a film about etc. etc. etc.
Of course they are from real people form different book companies, but they all want money(ies) to make all that happen. I send them all to spam. πŸ™‚

  3. Occasionally, I get comments or likes from folks who operate in a different realm. They seem to be trying to monetize their sites. I feel like my realm is more like a little writers’ club where we write to entertain ourselves and are tickled when our stuff entertains someone else.

    1. Judy that is it exactly! I read posts to be entertained, to share stories, and to learn about different people/places/things! It is a nice little community of writers and poets. I don’t know what I’d do if all of you disappeared…

      1. exactly, my deleted hadn’t even commented once … if they were actually reading I’d be most surprised! They didn’t even notice I’d deleted them πŸ™‚

  4. I get about ten spam comments a month, sometimes more. Most are solicitations to improve my blog, from marketers, like what you’re describing. But the funny thing is, I’m pretty sure I’ve gotten the exact same comment you posted! They send those things to everyone…… I used to get one about how young people hate “us boomers” too.

  5. I usually get spam that wants to give me suggestions of how to get more traffic to the blog, or people who think I want to employ someone else to write for my blog. Very rarely do I get spam unrelated to blogging.

    1. Stephanie I’m so glad this made you smile! I think there must be a threshold on posts (for the number of comments) that triggers the spam bots to spring into action!

    1. That’s what I thought! But that one post has over 200 comments and that’s the post that all the spam is from! Seems it isn’t just the number of followers but also factors how many comments you get…
